ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to provide insight into the emerging field of modern contactless angle measurement systems. It outlines the application of these systems to the automotive, industrial, and consumer fields. It presents the description of the different sensors employed for contactless angle measurement, highlighting their main features. It also presents three different fabricated solutions for contactless angle detection based on a giant magnetoresistive (GMR) sensor bridge, and compares their performance. Contactless angle detection is an emerging field that is experiencing an ongoing growth in terms of techniques proposed, market sales, and application areas. The GMR sensor employed in the contactless potentiometers is fabricated by Infineon Technologies and is based on a hard–soft multilayer with artificial anti ferromagnet. A simple approach for linearization of sensors is using analog circuits with active and/or passive components. The chapter provides an overview of different application areas that benefit from the increased reliability and lifetime of contactless potentiometers.
