ABSTRACT

I first got to know Eugenio (Gene) Martinez in the early 1980s, although my friendship with his mentor, Carl Ingling, goes back 10 years earlier. One day Carl waylaid me outside the exhibit hall at a meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) because he felt Dr. Martinez-Uriegas had some things to say that I ought to hear. So this young professor from Mexico and I sat on the curb in the Florida heat while he sketched graphs and wrote equations; Gene had come prepared for our meeting. In retrospect, that curbside conversation seems of historic importance, at least for me.
