ABSTRACT

As in other biological fields, the relation between visual science and engineering is a two-way street. Good science can have useful applications in image processing, transmission, and display, some of which are described in later chapters of this book; and good engineering can provide unique and important tools for basic research in vision. I was privileged to be associated with the development of two of these research tools: digitally controlled TV techniques for generating visual stimuli, and a noncontact method of sensing eye movements, which we have used for stabilizing the retinal image.
