ABSTRACT

This chapter presents primarily the calculus-based approach to laser models that yield analytical results. The “gold standard” model for the prediction of output power and the optimization of laser optics is the Rigrod approach. One key feature of the Rigrod formulation is the assumption that attenuation of the amplifier medium is zero. In the laser mirrors M1 through M3 are high reflectors and the optical diode has a transmission of TOD. The expression for the optimal output coupler transmission of the ring laser can be developed starting with the Rigrod expression for output power. The analysis begins in much the same way as the previous analysis for the standing wave laser but is simplified since only a single beam exists, rotating around the ring in a clockwise direction.
