ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the method to identify the parameters to monitor for Prognostics and health management (PHM). It discusses the considerations of how to select appropriate sensor systems for a PHM application, including the required performance, electrical and physical attributes, reliability and cost of the sensor systems. The chapter also presents the features of commercially available sensor systems for PHM and emerging trends in the technologies of sensor systems for PHM. In PHM applications, some sensor systems can directly identify the faults and failure mechanisms of a product. Failure modes, mechanisms and effects analysis prioritizes the failure mechanisms based on their occurrence and severity. The time-domain reflectometry coefficient can be used as a sensing method for the determination of interconnect failure mechanisms, as well as for early detection of the degradation associated with those mechanisms.
