ABSTRACT

While the storage options naturally connected to certain types of energy installations are usually of modest cost, this is rarely the case for dedicated stores built solely to take care of mismatch between production and demand. This is one reason why many competing solutions have been explored and why the different paths of development have created a shifting environment, where one storage solution is preferred at a given time, while a different one is preferred at another point in time. The following discussion of several such storage technologies is divided into stores for low-quality energy (heat at low temperatures, Section 9.1) and stores for high-quality energy (electric power, mechanical energy, and chemical energy, Section 9.2).
