ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the applications of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) in industrial environments. It examines applications of Industrial WSNs (IWSNs) and discusses possible future trends in this area. The chapter provides the taxonomy of the IWSN applications for environmental sensing, condition monitoring and process automation. It presents the extensive list of IWSN solutions and service providers. General objective in the environmental monitoring is an efficient information gathering, used both for prevention and analysis. The importance of the pollution detection both in materials for the production as well as in the production ambients makes the pollution monitoring one of the most widely spread field of application in environmental sensing. The chapter aims to distinguish two classes of condition monitoring applications: structural health monitoring and equipment condition monitoring. Service monitoring is mainly related to evaluating the quality of the provision of a specific service to end-users.
