ABSTRACT

The need for specific wireless communication standards in industrial automation has risen from the fact that most existing standards are targeting the consumer industry. There are naturally different standards in each domain and this chapter focuses on standards for process automation. A regulation is a legislative text that constrains rights and allocates responsibility. A standard is a set of requirements that specifies how the radio protocol works. Specifications are written by organizations like the Highway Accessible Remote Transducer (HART) Communication Foundation and the International Society of Automation to promote a wireless protocol. The IEEE 802.15.4 is a wireless standard for low power, moderate speed communication networks. One of WirelessHART’s main advantages is that interoperability is enforced on all layers in the OSI model. The focus of the ISA100 committee is that ISA100 shall be a family of industrial wireless standards covering different applications such as process applications, and asset tracking and identification.
