ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a survey paper covering the use of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for intelligent transportation systems. It focuses on a study of WSN applications for car park management systems. The chapter discusses the use of WSN for intra-vehicle applications, traffic safety applications, and vehicle sensor networks. It presents a discussion of potential issues such as noise and interferences in the outdoor environments that are typical for transportation. The chapter also discusses the power consumption, sensor technologies, and comparison of the various techniques used by different papers. The success of an intelligent parking application in detecting vehicles accurately and reliably is dependent on the types and locations of the sensors. An anisotropic magneto-resistive sensor is used to detect the presence of a vehicle in the parking berth, and the time division multiple access scheme is adopted for the sensor nodes to communicate wirelessly to the gateway.
