ABSTRACT
This chapter describes the main things that electronics have to endure in order to survive and perform. There are a variety of different forms of transportation where electronics has to play a part, with the key sectors being automotive, aerospace, marine, and traction. As heat and thermal cycling are one of the main lifetime killers of electronics, it is important to design the electronics with wide-temperature excursions in mind. One of the key challenges for any electronics designer endeavoring to implement a battery sensor system is that of not only combining high resolution of the battery voltage. Without question, the most obvious environmental concern for electronics in the automotive sector is temperature. Aerospace is one of the most challenging areas in engineering. The key for any traction system for both environmental and economic reasons has to be efficiency with the benefit for the designer of lower losses and the payback of reduced issues for the electronics.
