ABSTRACT

This chapter presents sections on SiGe technology in extreme environments, the Remote Electronics Unit legacy architecture, the over-temperature experimental qualification of the remote sensor interface application specific integrated circuit with remote digital control-based field programmable gate array, the radiation qualification of the same, and finally, some concluding remarks. Electronics in space vehicles face a host of challenges from their harsh operating environment. Extremely wide temperature ranges and dangerous levels of cosmic and trapped radiation can cause catastrophic damage to unprotected circuitry. Recently, there has been a paradigm shift that advocates moving away from centralized “warm-boxes” and toward decentralized system-on-a-chip and system-in-a-package solutions that do not require environmental control.
