ABSTRACT

The drilling industry is very large, employing millions of people, producing much of the world’s energy by harvesting in oil, natural gas, and geothermal fluids from deep in the earth. To control the well while drilling, the driller balances the weight of the drilling mud inside the drill string with the expected reservoir pressure. There are three basic operations involving the need for high-temperature electronics supporting the drilling industry: drilling the well, completing the well, and logging the completed well. Measurement while drilling tools are instrumentation packages mounted behind the drilling bit. Logging tools are used to survey a well. Logging tools are scientific in nature and in construction, providing a wide range of data. In smart wells, the electronic devices and sensors monitor and control well production. These systems are considered permanently installed, and although most can be retrieved, some are cemented in place.
