ABSTRACT

Two domestic simulation studies—Vista Sabre41 and Vista Sabre II42—demonstrated the clear advantage for a pilot equipped with an head-mounted displays (HMDs) when targeting missiles over a pilot using only a head-up displays. The HMD expands on this capability by placing the information in front of the pilot’s eyes at all times and by linking the information to the orientation to the pilot’s line of sight. This monocular helmet-mounted display gives the pilot the ability—similar to the Cobra gunship—to target head-slaved weapons, with the added ability to display head-tracked forward looking infra-red imagery for nighttime flying. Head-mounted displays can provide a distinctly unique and personal viewing experience that no other display technology can. By providing the pilot with display information that is linked to head orientation, the pilot is freed from having to return his attention to the cockpit interior and is able to navigate and fly the aircraft in a more intuitive and natural manner.
