ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with distributions which model many real-life situations. It describes a series of trials where there are two possible outcomes per trial and the probability for each outcome is the same for all trials. The chapter also describes that outcomes of different trials are independent events. Applications abound in law, medicine, political science, sports, and other areas. The Supreme Court of California later disagreed and reversed the decision based on an argument using the binomial model. The chapter presents an approximation which applies when the sample size is large and the two possible outcomes are equally likely. It also deals with a model which is similar to the binomial except that the number of draws is not fixed. The random variable of interest in this model is the number of trials needed for an event to occur.
