ABSTRACT

To complement the main magnetic suspension system, actively controlled dc electromagnets with permanent magnets are placed on board. The preliminary electromagnetic design methodologies should constitute a good ground for a closer to target initialization of the optimization design and the single-sided linear electric machines (SLIM) model required in this enterprise. The design methodology by a numerical example includes: the specifications; additional data; main dimensions, parameters, and performance; secondary thermal design issues and performance numerical results. The secondary temperature influences the goodness factor, andthe thrust and secondary losses produced at standstill vary and should be accounted for by a verification of the worst scenario startup conditions. The reader is advised to proceed with care as the SLIM optimal design is far from an exhausted subject, even in the presence of a few commercial, urban, wheeled, successful SLIM vehicles.
