ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a broad view of what a biometric system is and which techniques are commonly employed to measure and compare systems’ performance. It also provides an overview of the current biometric traits that are part of the International Civil Aviation Organization standard. The chapter discusses a general discussion defines the components of a biometric system and the tools to measure and compare systems’ performance. It focuses on several biometric traits and their associated recognition techniques. The chapter presents the new trends and challenges that the biometric panorama offers, and a series of examples of working systems and applications will be presented as well. It explains a brief overview of several biometric traits: face, iris, and fingerprint. The chapter also presents two widely adopted approaches to automatic face recognition from still intensity images: one deal with face as a whole, the other one is a local feature-based approach.
