ABSTRACT

The smart grid concept has experienced major hype in the past few years. The smart grid projects will provide invaluable data on the benefits and cost-effectiveness of the smart grid, including energy and cost savings. The mission of the Smart Grid Task Force is to ensure awareness, coordination, and integration of the diverse activities related to smart grid technologies, practices, and services. The NIST Smart Grid Advisory Committee provides input to NIST on smart grid interoperability standards, priorities, and gaps and on the overall direction, status, and health of the smart grid implementation by the smart grid industry, including identification of issues and needs. In response to an energy crisis, the US Congress passed the DOE Organization Act in 1977, which consolidated various energy-related agencies into the DOE. The use case repository documents functional requirements of industry smart grid projects. The IEC through SG 3 is working in close collaboration with smart grid projects around the globe, including US NIST.
