ABSTRACT

The efficient optical communications through the atmosphere have been the challenge for the scientific and the engineering communities for more than a century. A generated laser light can be spatially randomized by means of a diffuser or a Spatial Light Modulator and sent through the channel containing the turbulent atmosphere. The quantity that characterizes the quality of the communication link at best is the Bit-Error-Rate. For the simplest On-Off key modulation scheme it is given by the expression. Intuitively, the probability density function of a fluctuating quantity shows with which chance it attains a certain level. Practically, from the acquired data of the fluctuating signal one can numerically calculate its statistical moments of any order. Light Detection And Ranging is a system that employs the information about reflected and/or scattered light waves for detection, tracking and characterization of a target, which might be either natural or man-made.
