ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the simulation and experimental results of a particular type of an actively mode-locked multiwavelength erbium-doped ›ber laser (AMLM-EDFL) operating in the 1550 nm communication window. Section 11.1 provides an overview of the various important applications of the AMLM-EDFLs and their unique performance and cost advantages over the competing technologies. Section 11.2 discusses the numerical model used in the analysis of the AMLM-EDFL through the use of the NLSE, which includes the loss, and dispersive and nonlinear effects of the ›ber laser cavity. In Section 11.3, the effectiveness of the numerical model presented in Section 11.2 is demonstrated by simulating two lasing wavelengths at 10 Gbps. Section 11.4 describes the experimental results of a dual-wavelength ›ber laser to verify the simulation results presented in Section 11.2. The main results drawn from the chapter are given in Section 11.5 together with some suggestions for the future.
