ABSTRACT

More oen than not, modern embedded systems must provide some form of real-time execution capability and, most importantly, must be connected to a network.

At the same time, open-source operating systems have steadily gained popularity in recent years for embedded applications due to absence of licensing fees and royalties, a feature that promises to easily cut down the cost of their deployment. Moreover, many open-source operating systems have nowadays reached an excellent level of maturity and stability, comply with international standards and are able to support even demanding, hard real-time applications.
