ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an introduction and brief overview to the interval type-2 fuzzy logic controller (FLC) and highlights its benefits, especially in highly uncertain environments. Fuzzy control is regarded as the most widely used application of fuzzy logic. A fuzzy logic controller (FLC) is credited with being an adequate methodology for designing robust controllers that are able to deliver a satisfactory performance in the face of uncertainty and imprecision. In the 1980s, several important industrial applications of fuzzy logic were launched successfully in Japan, where Hitachi put a fuzzy logic based automatic train control system into operation in Sendai city’s subway system in 1987. The campaign turns out to be a successful marketing effort not only for the product, but also for the fuzzy logic technology. The chapter provides a practical example to clarify the various operations of the type-2 FLC.
