It is known that technologies to synchronize clocks are not an exclusive research topic of the computer age.Asamatteroffact,theconstructionofhighlyaccurateclocksandtheresultingrequirementsfor synchronizationdatebacktotheseventeenthcentury.However,theactualresearchfortheusagein distributedsystemsbeganwiththeintroductionofnetworkedcomputing.¥eissuewas¦rstdiscussed indepthwiththetopicofeventorderingbyLamport[Lamport1978].Agood,generaloverviewon availablealgorithmscanbefoundin[Anceaume1997].Later,especiallywiththeupcomingreal-time networks[Kopetz1987,Palumbo1992,Liskov,Patt1994],theproblemcameagainintoscienti¦cdiscussion.¥ischaptergivesanoverviewofthestateoftheartofclocksynchronizationprotocolsaswellas their application in real-time networks.
