ABSTRACT

Presence information is a well-known concept in the Internet world and is widely used by applications like Instant Messaging and Push to Talk. This kind of application allows a user to ascertain the willingness of other users on  his or her buddy list to communicate. This is achieved by basic presence states like online, ofine, busy, or absent. This basic understanding of presence is evolving toward a much more generic, exible concept. Presence is used to characterize entities that may affect the management of communications with a user, which allows applications to take intelligent decisions about the start, continuation, and end of user communications. This information forms the basis for deploying a range of advanced applications that are innately associated with the mobility of users. Moreover, presence is seen as a key enabler of xed mobile convergence (FMC) services
