ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the principle and mathematical framework of the Fourier modal method (FMM). It presents FMM with a logical extension of the previous one-dimensional structure analysis, keeping in mind that FMM is actually a mathematical generalization of the previous analysis on 1D structures to two-dimensional/three-dimensional structures. The chapter analyses the S-matrix analysis of a finite single-block structure with FMM is performed, through which the basis of FMM. It provides a practical application of FMM to extraordinary optical transmission phenomena with numerical simulation results and a physical interpretation. The Fourier modal analysis and the S-matrix analysis of a single-block structure are a prerequisite for studying various advanced issues of FMM. The algorithm for interconnecting with the block S-matrix and boundary S-matrix of multiblock structures is established. In FMM, the S-matrix method can be applied fairly easily to the electromagnetic modal analysis of multiblock structures.
