ABSTRACT
The two broad classifications of discrete component package types are hermetic and plastic. Each offers its own distinct advantages. In many environments, hermetic packaging may be mandatory. It has excellent resistance to water and other solvents, while offering the broadest operating temperature range and resistance to thermal shocks. Surface mount chip carriers (SMCCs) offer solutions to many applications that require more than standard or conventional discrete components or assemblies. SMCC devices offer unique light emitting diode (LED) and sensor configurations to suit a special set of application requirements. High-power LEDs fulfill a growing number of applications. They can have any typical peak wavelength, such as UV LEDs, visible LEDs, or infrared LEDs. The assemblies category consists of a variety of products that can be used in many noncontact sensing situations. Optocouplers may be divided into different types: standard DIP and SMD, through-hole, AC couplers, high-speed analog or digital, and high reliability.
