ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the undesirable effects of the harmonics in the power system. It discusses IEEE Standard 519-1992 that is, IEEE recommended practices and requirements for harmonic control in power systems, and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61000-series standards dealing with electromagnetic compatibility. The chapter also discusses the two different philosophies based on which these standards are developed. It describes many practical issues that have to be solved to apply these standards, such as, designing an efficient procedure to evaluate the acceptability of an installation, specifying rational conditions to perform an evaluation, and defining equitable limits to check acceptability. The chapter deals with a discussion of the salient features in the B.C. Hydro’s utility harmonic regulations based on the IEEE Std 519-1992. The chapter provides salient features of the standards IEEE 519-1992 and IEC 61000-3-6, together with differences in their philosophy in setting harmonic voltage and current limits.
