ABSTRACT

The finite-impulse response (FIR) filter is characterized by a unit-sample response that has a finite duration. One of the advantages of FIR filters compared to their infinite-impulse response (IIR) counterparts is that FIR filters can be designed with exactly linear phase. Linear phase response is important for applications where phase distortion due to n onlinear phase can degrade performance, such as in data transmission and television applications.
