ABSTRACT

Recently, video transcoding has found many applications. We present several applications in this chapter. The first application is the transcoding of MPEG-2 to MPEG4 bit streams. Since the MPEG-4 video coding standard has been used for video streaming and mobile terminals, but some content in the video servers is encoded with MPEG-2 video coding, we need convert the MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 for those users with the MPEG-4 decoder to receive the MPEG-2 encoded content. The second application is the video transcoding for IP or wireless networks. In these kinds of transmission applications, the function of error resilience is very important. We will introduce several methods of error resilience transcoding. Finally, the topic of objectbased transcoding technique for MPEG-4 will be presented.
