ABSTRACT
As first noted by Gilbert, a stream flowing down the steeper slope of an asymmetric divide or hill erodes its valley more rapidly than one flowing down the gentler slope. The result is that the crest of the divide migrates away from the more actively eroding stream toward the less actively eroding one.
