In the early 1990s, ENEL, the former Italian national power company, addressed R&D in the field of artificial intelligence. One ofthe branches that proved to be successful was load forecasting leading to some applications that are presently in use at the Italian independent system operator (called GRTN). Artificial intelligence techniques are now internationally recognized as ripe and essential tools to face a set ofpower system problems whose solutions would not be satisfactory with traditional approaches. Neural networks and fuzzy logic are user-friendly and effective tools. They can be used alone, in combination with one another, or with traditional techniques. This versatility can successfully confront a number of problems in the areas of prediction, regression, classification, optimization, and control, which cover almost every field of the power system, especially load forecasting. The following is a comprehensive description of the activities in this field that in 10 years time have led to several prototypes and two stable working software applications and have also paved the way to several other minor tools.
