ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a special fine-scale effect, track production — the result of irradiation with ions. Tracks typically are elongated, needle-shaped regions that are densely populated with atomic defects. But if tracks are short enough (at low deposited energy), they are less well-defined, low-density globs of damage, rather than being needle-like.
