ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights a number of issues and challenges. Since these issues are all related to human visual perception, inevitably they are leading back to fundamental questions and, maybe, new challenges to vision research and/or how to transfer vision science, to imaging and visual communication systems engineering. The vision models currently used in picture quality assessment and coding are based on a number of assumptions and premises. When considering the criteria for selection of transform techniques for compression, it seemed only natural that a complete transform should be favored over an over-complete transform. To achieve further performance improvements for digital picture coding in a perceptual quality and bit rate optimization sense, selection of a better coding framework and structure may hold a vital key. The chapter also presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book.
