ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the topic of vision model based digital video impairment metrics, based on the work of the Perceptual Blocking Distortion Metric and the Perceptual Ringing Distortion Metric. It reviews the formation of vision model for the objective measurement of coding artifacts. A proliferation of applications of digital image and video compression technology has been witnessed , from digital camera, digital television, video conferencing, to mobile multimedia, to name a few. Measuring digital image and video quality/distortion has long been an important, albeit challenging, task in the field. Modeling human vision has long been a challenging research topic, as the human visual system is extremely complex and difficult to understand. Input video sequences are filtered in temporal domain to simulate the spatio-temporal contrast sensitivity mechanism of human vision. The contrast gain control stage in a multi-channel vision model follows the spatio-temporal decomposition and the contrast sensitivity function filtering.
