ABSTRACT

This has largely to do with the fact that the deployment of the next generation of routers will be much broader than it is today. Today, routers have taken over the corporate data network. However, they are not predominant in the Central Office yet. Therefore, neither density nor failsafe design nor serviceability while in operation have been high priority design considerations. This will change in the very near future, and for that reason routers in COs will take over a lot of the mechanical designs from TelCo gear, such as Class 4 and Class 5 Central Office Plain Old Telephony System (POTS) switches. For routers that are not deployed in these categories, the mechanical design will focus more on compactness and price, therefore resulting in a different category of products.
