ABSTRACT
The purpose of a router is to forward datagrams from an ingress port to an egress port. During periods of link contention or congestion, it also must make decisions as to when to queue or discard a datagram. The line cards or processor cards in a midplane design derive the forwarding decision, the queuing decision, or the drop decision from information contained in the packets’ or cells’ header or even in their payload.
