ABSTRACT

Few images are acquired with perfect exposure and contrast settings, accurate color representation, uniform illumination, or an ideal point of view. Methods are available that can often correct for a variety of these shortcomings. It is important to understand and use the image histogram as a tool for examining the image contents, and to understand the differences between different representations of color and their uses. This chapter introduces those concepts, and illustrates how adjustments to pixel values can be performed to improve images.
