ABSTRACT
In the following three chapters, we shall deal with the way in which light is produced, modulated, detected, and guided. These processes are crucial to the methods by which we seek to manipulate and use light, for they control and limit the methods by which information is impressed upon, and subsequently extracted from, light signals.
