ABSTRACT

A quick positioning test with Ekahau Manager to test positioning accuracy is to use dummy access points only. This chapter shows how to set up a location service using different positioning systems and related technologies. A good example of deploying a location-based service using Ekahau is the HawkTour project at Illinois Institute of Technology's, an end-user application written in Java that automatically presents a scalable map of the local area and links points of interest in the vicinity. Just like outdoor global positioning systems guide tours, HawkTour’s navigational capabilities tell students where to find classrooms, food service, restrooms, and specific administration areas. Naturally, despite the predicted or expected resolution of a system, an actual deployment may have to consider interference from other unanticipated sources, or that the orientation of the communications signal transducer on either the communications access point or the mobile device play, a factor in accurate measurement of signal strength.
