ABSTRACT

In recent years, questions have arisen within the field of forensic science as instances of contaminated evidence, fabrication of scientific results, and ineffective laboratory management have surfaced in laboratories across the nation. The problems plaguing forensic science have resulted in highly publicized postconviction exonerations and numerous legal suits stemming from improper laboratory protocol. This adverse situation has created considerable fragmentation within the field. Currently, within the United States, there exists no professional governing body harboring oversight of forensic laboratories or those tasked with analyzing evidence. Due to the significance of the duties allocated to forensic technicians, ethical considerations necessitate some measure of governance be created to help ensure precision. This chapter will examine issues pertaining to accreditation, ethical considerations, state oversight, and certification currently affecting the discipline of forensic science and provide support for recent developments in the creation of administrative management within the field.
