ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses recent work in soccer in which vast amounts of player and match performance data are produced on a weekly basis. It commences with a background on the information needs of soccer, complex aspects such as tactics and the use of performance indicators. The chapter is written from various stakeholder points of view, including coaches, scouts, analytics providers and academics. The chapter also discusses the application of analytics systems and related technology within soccer. It is a case study describing the genuine real-world impact of analytics in sports. The case study is an excellent example of a multiple methods analytics approach. The chapter also covers the use of performance profiling in international soccer and its use in performance monitoring over time.
