ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses decision-making processes involving quantitative data analysis, envisioning information using qualitative approaches and human expertise in a flexible interactive process. An exploration of the events to focus on to improve decathlon performance is used to illustrate data visualisation principles. This example shows the need for both multiple views and pre-processing of data to allow multiple types of analysis. This chapter discusses decision-making forums in which data are analysed and interactive “what if” questions are raised. The chapter also covers perceptual and cognitive aspects of using shapes, colour and spacing within presentations.
