ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the circumstances under which athletes may take prohibited substances inadvertently, reviews the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) rules and regulations regarding inadvertent use of prohibited substances and provides suggestions as to how athletes and their support staff have a role in preventing inadvertent use. Many of the classes of drugs that appear on the WADA Prohibited List are prescribed for the treatment of medical conditions, such as asthma, Type 1 diabetes, cardiovascular disorders and sports injuries. Athlete Support Personnel (ASP) include many groups, all of whom can play a role in preventing both the deliberate and inadvertent use of prohibited substances in sport. The risk of inadvertent use of prohibited substances in sport can be minimised. There are a number of ways in which healthcare professionals can advise and support athletes to reduce the incidence of inadvertent use of prohibited substances.
