ABSTRACT
Interpretation is the result of a long process of sustained inspiration, a distilled awareness that comes from immersing deeply into a work of art or an intellectual enterprise. Besides being inspirational guides, directors are also instigators of interpretation for their company as well as for the audience. They lead by mobilizing an intricate, competitive, and visceral exchange, where the meaning of the work always remains fluid and is determined by factors that influence individual hierarchies of cognition and value. Playwrights have held a prominent position at the top of the interpretative pyramid. In the context of collaborative engagement, the individual impressions of actors and designers will be adjusted, in varying degrees of compliance, to the director's overall vision of the play. Settling on protagonist status goes hand in hand with more practical point of view strategies, such as the decision, for reasons of focus, to bring a character/performer to the foreground on both literal and figurative levels.
