ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to tease out the impact of globalization on the substance and pedagogy of English language teaching. The chapter starts with an overview of broad changes to education systems, focusing on the reshaping of education in many places according to economic needs and market principles. The chapter will then narrow down the discussion to how global economic trends have impacted English literacy education, attempting to cover both L1 and L2 contexts. The key argument here will be that the impact has been largely negative, and has engendered reduced curricula, teacher-centered pedagogies and diminished teacher autonomy.
