ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a detailed account and assessment of the Gibraltar double-cross system, which operated independently from 1941 to late 1943, at which time it was absorbed into the larger Mediterranean double-cross system dominated by ‘A’ Force. Until that time, though, the Gibraltar double agents were essential in protecting the British fortress against the depredations of German-directed Spanish saboteurs. The demand in Gibraltar for Spanish day-labourers – any of whom could smuggle in a bomb – meant this threat was challenging to counteract, and double agents offered the most effective solution.
