ABSTRACT

In his book Out of Solitude, Henri J. M. Nouwen asks a thought provoking question: “How can we be or become a caring community, a community of people not trying to cover the pain or to avoid it by sophisticated bypasses, but rather share it as the source of healing and new life?” [l, p. 391. The answer to his question defines the essence of aftercare in funeral service. Indeed, a solid and well-founded aftercare program can provide a container in which this healing and growth after loss can occur.
