ABSTRACT

The term “aftercare” rings true for many bereaved individuals and their care providers. The need is there, but just what is the nature of that need for the funeral director’s “aftercare” service? What constitutes aftercare and who should be involved? Is training needed and should programs be accredited? Are there certification opportunities? Little has been done to document answers to these and similar questions raised by funeral directors who, as business professionals, have

explored various models of aftercare. This chapter addresses several dimensions of aftercare for the bereaved by examining practical assumptions, general principles, core values, and ethical concerns in aftercare practice.
