ABSTRACT

There are many materials available to use with students when a death has occurred. Books about death and grief exist in abundance. They are geared to many ages, developmental levels, and even to specific culturaVethnic groups. A book that is very good for a middle school student or class may miss the mark entirely if read to second graders. Teachers and parents should know in advance what is contained in any story they share with a child. There are deatMoss curricula for high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools. These are not automatically interchangeable. Material aimed at younger students can be used with older students, but the reverse is not equally true. A classic book that pointed out the developmental differences in student grief and highlighted possible ways of dealing with grief in ways appropriate to the level of the student is Discussing Death by Gretchen Mills et al. It does not provide a curriculum, but offers instead the information that can be the basis for creating classes to aid grieving students.
