ABSTRACT

Aftercare workers come to realize that the emotional and spiritual healing that the bereaved are searching for comes as a result of finding a safe community. In the context of this chapter, community would be the bereavement support group. Healing can manifest itself most forcefully when the members of a support group and the facilitators mobilize themselves to care for each person first as an individual and second as a member of the whole. A group such as this creates a communal effort that encourages direct, supportive, healing relationships. In addition, the members and facilitators create a safe environment where they can listen to the stories and witness the suffering in each other.
