ABSTRACT

Globalization and neoliberalism promote unhealthy work environments because the inherent philosophy and practices contribute to the growth of a "dispensable worker" and a growing imbalance of power between workers and employers. As globalization has proceeded, enormous wealth has been created worldwide, much of it concentrated in the hands of the owners of production. Exposing workers to an increasing array of organizational demands and psychosocial exposures, exceeding the human organism's capacity to cope, leads in turn to chronic biological arousal, which ultimately can damage one's health—physically and/or psychologically. The stress that work environments can cause workers and the resultant spillover to their personal lives and families is usually ignored by our society and often denied by the individual in the face of the urgency to retain employment and help support one's family. The workplace stressors contribute to unhealthy or "noxious" work environments or "noxious work.".
